Understanding the Difference Between Public Health and Community Health

The concept of health takes into account physical, psychological , and social well-being. As such, according to the World Health Organization , it is not merely the absence of disease or infirmity and more recently, a resource for everyday living. Public health is an interdisciplinary field. For example, epidemiology , biostatistics , social sciences and management of health services are all relevant. Other important sub-fields include environmental health , community health , behavioral health , health economics , public policy , mental health , health education , health politics , occupational safety , disability , gender issues in health, and sexual and reproductive health. Public health aims to improve the quality of life through prevention and treatment of disease , including mental health.

Sometimes panic sets in because a drug seems to be responsible for the death of some of its users, but how can people evaluate what they read and hear? How are adverse reactions and side effects studied and measured?

The U. These jobs can take many forms: doctors and nurses who diagnose illnesses and prescribe treatments, community health professionals who promote healthy living in certain geographic areas, or public health professionals who work to improve the health of a population at large. While these roles differ, they all work toward preventing disease and promoting wellness. Public health and community health professionals may not work with patients directly, but they play an important role in creating healthcare plans and awareness campaigns. Previous healthcare experience can be an asset in these careers, but healthcare workers interested in public health or community health should consider an advanced degree if they want to succeed in one of these fields. Their work is largely preventive, as they take steps to ensure that a population has clean food and water, and design informational campaigns to teach the public about health and wellness.

Public health , the art and science of preventing disease , prolonging life, and promoting physical and mental health , sanitation, personal hygiene, control of infectious diseases , and organization of health services. From the normal human interactions involved in dealing with the many problems of social life, there has emerged a recognition of the importance of community action in the promotion of health and the prevention and treatment of disease, and this is expressed in the concept of public health. The technology necessary for effective, innovative application of information technology to public health practice is available today at very reasonable costs. The barrier to the widespread application of such technology is that few public health professionals have received any formal training in informatics, and most lack even a basic understanding of the nature and purpose of informatics as a discipline. Although the discipline of public health informatics has much in common with other informatics specialty areas, it differs from them in several ways. These include 1 a focus on applications of information science and technology that promote the health of populations, rather than of individuals; 2 a focus on disease prevention, rather than treatment; 3 a focus on preventive intervention at all vulnerable points in the causal chains leading to disease, injury, or disability; and 4 operation within a governmental, rather than a private, context. Drivers of change forcing public health professionals to be conversant with the development, use, and strategic importance of computerized health information systems include public health reform, the growth in managed care, and the information technology revolution. In communities, health is a product of many factors, and many segments of the community have the potential to contribute to and share responsibility for its protection and improvement. Changes in public policy, in public- and private-sector roles in health and health care, and in public expectations are presenting opportunities and challenges for communities addressing both the overall health status of the population and more specific health issues. Performance monitoring can be used as a tool to assess activities in many sectors and to promote collaboration and accountability in working toward better health for the whole community, especially within the framework of a community-based health improvement process. This report from the Institute of Medicine IOM Committee on Using Performance Monitoring to Improve Community Health outlines the elements of an ongoing and evolving health improvement process, discusses the role that performance monitoring can play, and offers tools to help communities develop and use performance indicators. In its proposals and recommendations, the committee is responding to the need it sees to introduce a conceptual framework for using performance monitoring concepts to improve community health as a whole—as opposed to monitoring performance within specific community entities.
