THERE is real satisfaction for a lifelong student of philosophy, when he finds the loyalties of his youth emerging from obloquy and arresting the attention of a generation whose temper of mind is inevitably alien to his own. As Hegel said, it is a tribute to the greatness of a philosopher that he compels his successors to refute him. They were tired of monism and the absolute and of idealist epistemology in general. Yet Bradley is still a living force, and now even the youngest, disillusioned with the new gods, are beginning to be interested in discovering for themselves what it was he had to say.

Indeed, the two greatest in the above-mentioned list, Alexander and Whitehead, frankly confessed their indebtedness to Bradley's teaching, and have thereby contributed not a little to stimulate this revival of interest.

Problems of Philosophy

Bradley , in full Francis Herbert Bradley , born January 30, , Clapham, Surrey , England—died September 18, , Oxford , influential English philosopher of the absolute Idealist school, which based its doctrines on the thought of G. Hegel and considered mind to be a more fundamental feature of the universe than matter. Elected to a fellowship at Merton College, Oxford , in , Bradley soon became ill with a kidney disease that made him a semi-invalid for the rest of his life. Because his fellowship involved no teaching duties and because he never married, he was able to devote the major part of his life to writing. In The Principles of Logic , Bradley denounced the deficient psychology of the Empiricists, whose logic was limited, in his view, to the doctrine of the association of ideas held in the human mind. He gave Hegel due credit for borrowed ideas in both books, but he never embraced Hegelianism thoroughly. While reality is indeed spiritual, he maintained, a detailed demonstration of the notion is beyond human capacity.

Bradley, who was a life fellow of Merton College, Oxford, was influenced by Hegel, and also reacted against utilitarianism. He was recognised during his lifetime as one of the greatest intellectuals of his generation and was the first philosopher to receive the Order of Merit, in His work is considered to have been important to the formation of analytic philosophy. In metaphysics, he rejected pluralism and realism, and believed that English philosophy needed to deal systematically with first principles. This work, first published in , is divided into two parts: 'Appearance' deals with exposing the contradictions that Bradley believed are hidden in our everyday conceptions of the world; and in 'Reality', he builds his positive account of reality and considers possible objections to it. Bradley — was the most famous, original and philosophically influential of the British Idealists. These philosophers came to prominence in the closing decades of the nineteenth century, but their effect on British philosophy and society at large — and, through the positions of power attained by some of their pupils in the institutions of the British Empire, on much of the world — persisted well into the first half of the twentieth. They stood out amongst their peers in consciously rejecting some main aspects of the tradition of their earlier compatriots, such as Hume and Mill, and responding, albeit in an original and critical fashion, rather to the work of Kant and Hegel. On the contrary, they were open to a variety of influences, including the philosophy of an anti-idealist thinker such as J. Upon the whole, the Idealists revitalized British philosophy by making it permeable to a rich variety of continental ideas. Sigwart and discussed their ideas in their logical treatises.

APPEARANCE AND REALITY. A METAPHYSICAL ESSAY. F. H. BRADLEY. Second Edition (Revised), with an Appendix. Francis Herbert Bradley b.

F. H. Bradley

Appearance and Reality ; second edition [1] is a book by the English philosopher Francis Herbert Bradley , in which the author, influenced by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel , argues that most things are appearances and attempts to describe the reality these appearances misrepresent, which Bradley calls the Absolute. It is the main statement of Bradley's metaphysics and is considered his most important book. Among the condemned include primary and secondary qualities, the distinction between an object and its properties, internal and external relations, space and time, motion and change, causality and activity, individual things and the self, the body and soul, physical nature and matter, judgment and absolute truth, thoughts and things, and many other phenomena that caught in his snare. After entering into the second book of Appearance and Reality , Bradley exchanges his heavily-used battering-ram for an eidetic canvas and paintbrush, and proceeds to draft a portrait of reality.

В самом низу страницы отсутствовала последняя СЦР. В ней оказалось такое количество знаков, что ее пришлось перенести в следующую колонку. Увидев эту цифру, Бринкерхофф испытал настоящий шок. 999 999 999.
