The relationship between instructed second language acquisition ISLA research, on the one hand, and English language teaching pedagogy, on the other, is not always clear and is sometimes contentious. While ISLA researchers hope to inform English second language L2 pedagogy, teachers may feel that theory and research are of limited use in their classrooms. The goal of ISLA, however, is to make explicit links among theory, research, and pedagogy by empirically evaluating theoretical claims about classroom instruction. This chapter explores the insights that ISLA theory and research, particularly from a cognitive-interactionist perspective, can bring to the classroom, while also considering the influence that pedagogical realities can have on theory and research. In particular, this chapter will explore the effects of explicit and implicit L2 instruction, along with the types of L2 knowledge whether explicit or implicit that result. Skip to main content. The natural approach is a method of language teaching developed by Stephen Krashen and Tracy Terrell in the late s and early s. It aims to foster naturalistic language acquisition in a classroom setting, and to this end it emphasises communication, and places decreased importance on conscious grammar study and explicit correction of student errors. Efforts are also made to make the learning environment as stress-free as possible. In the natural approach, language output is not forced, but allowed to emerge spontaneously after students have attended to large amounts of comprehensible language input. The natural approach has become closely associated with Krashen's monitor model , and it is often seen as an application of the theory to language teaching. Despite this perception, there are some differences, particularly Terrell's view that some degree of conscious grammar study can be beneficial. The syllabus focuses on activities which Terrell sees as promoting subconscious language acquisition.

And if so, what are the implications for the classroom? In the documentary, he says that acquisition is 'where the action is'. He stipulates that the emphasis should be on meaningful interactions and not on form. If the child says, 'Daddy fish water! The theory here is that exposure to sufficient quantities of comprehensible input always results in acquisition. Children don't start speaking their mother tongue straight away. Until they utter their first words, they are acquiring language, even if they are not using it.

Natural approach

Language acquisition does not require extensive use of conscious grammatical rules, and does not require tedious drill. Acquisition requires meaningful interaction in the target language - natural communication - in which speakers are concerned not with the form of their utterances but with the messages they are conveying and understanding. The best methods are therefore those that supply 'comprehensible input' in low anxiety situations, containing messages that students really want to hear. These methods do not force early production in the second language, but allow students to produce when they are 'ready', recognizing that improvement comes from supplying communicative and comprehensible input, and not from forcing and correcting production. In the real world, conversations with sympathetic native speakers who are willing to help the acquirer understand are very helpful.

Stephen Krashen and Tracy Terrell developed the "Natural Approach" in the early eighties Krashen and Terrell, , based on Krashens theories about second language acquisition. Following an initial "silent period", comprehension should precede production in speech, as the latter should be allowed to emerge in natural stages or progressions.
