Act 3, Scene 2 Notes from Merchant of Venice

Portia : I pray you, tarry, pause a day or two Before you hazard; for, in choosing wrong, I lose your company : therefore, forbear awhile. Bassanio rejects both of these caskets, and his reasons are significant in the total meaning of the play. Bassanio, however, begs to choose one of them. His anxiety is too great. At Belmont, Portia would like Bassanio to delay before he chooses one of the caskets. She hands him a letter to take to Lorenzo, who is supposed to be a guest of Bassanio's that night.

The scene begins in Portia's Belmont home. Bassanio , Gratiano , Portia , Nerissa , and numerous attendants enter. Portia asks Bassanio not to choose a chest just yet - she enjoys his company, and if he chooses the wrong chest, he'll have to leave her immediately and never return. Bassanio insists on choosing, because he can't bear the tension any longer. Portia speaks to herself as he chooses, more anxious than she's ever been. Bassanio examines the chests closely, and comes to the conclusion that the more gaudy chests serve only to distract potential suitors from the goal of the exercise.

This would deprive her of his sweet company. Question 2. How, and what risk Antonio helped Bassanio and at what risk? Answer: Antonio has.
