Theatre or theater [a] is a collaborative form of performing art that uses live performers, usually actors or actresses , to present the experience of a real or imagined event before a live audience in a specific place, often a stage. The performers may communicate this experience to the audience through combinations of gesture , speech, song, music , and dance. Elements of art, such as painted scenery and stagecraft such as lighting are used to enhance the physicality, presence and immediacy of the experience. Modern Western theatre comes, in large measure, from the theatre of ancient Greece , from which it borrows technical terminology, classification into genres , and many of its themes , stock characters , and plot elements. Theatre artist Patrice Pavis defines theatricality, theatrical language , stage writing and the specificity of theatre as synonymous expressions that differentiate theatre from the other performing arts , literature and the arts in general. Modern theatre includes performances of plays and musical theatre.

The architectural form of theatre in Rome has been linked to later, more well-known examples from the 1st century B. Rome was founded in B. E as a monarchy under Etruscan rule, and remained as such throughout the first two and a half centuries of its existence. It is believed that Roman theatre was born during the first two centuries of the Roman Republic , following the spread of Roman rule into a large area of the Italian Peninsula , circa B. Following the devastation of widespread plague in B. E, Roman citizens began including theatrical games as a supplement to the Lectisternium ceremonies already being performed, in a stronger effort to pacify the gods.
In order to come closer to an answer to the question, whether or not Senecas tragedies were intended to be staged, mere discretion by intra-textual evidences is not enough. It is not sufficient to use the features of Roman theatre buildings in general to clear the facts, as is sometimes done. The stage of the time of Plautus and Terence, for instance, seems to differ significantly from what we find in the well-known, representative theatres of the Late Republic and of the Imperial era. But even in the period between the late Republican Theatre of Pompey in Rome and, for example, the Early Imperial theatre of Aspendos in Anatolia, some structural and technical advancements can be noted. This is the attempt of this paper.

How, I wondered, do we reconcile or at least talk about this paradox? How do we address this seeming disparity between the central position of Roman culture in the western academy and its plays' marginal position in the university theatre world? Fortunately, I was doing my fretting in the company of Warren Smith, a senior colleague in the Department of Classics.
