This would be to think of the process as a 'complex structure in dominance', sustained tfuough the articulation of conlected practices, each of which, however, retains its distinctiveness and has its own specific modality, its own forms ald conditions of existence. The 'obiect' of these practices is meanings and messages in the form of sign-vehicles of a specific icind organized, like any form of commurf- cation or language, through the operation of codes within the syntag- matic chain of a discourse. It is in this discursive form that the circulation of the 'product' takes place.

Today theorists who do the analysis of media through reception theory often derive results from the experience of an audience created by watching a cinema, game or books. The audience comes into an understanding of the happenings of the text or screen. The audience receives the creative work done and perceives to its content in either similar or different. The meaning of the message can change in the way they see it fit according to their social context.

Titled 'Encoding and Decoding in the Television Discourse', Hall's essay offers a theoretical approach of how media messages are produced, disseminated, and interpreted. When you decode a message, you extract the meaning of that message in ways that make sense to you. Decoding has both verbal and non-verbal forms of communication: Decoding behavior without using words means observing body language and its associated emotions. Sometimes when someone is trying to get a message across to someone, the message can be interpreted differently from person to person. Decoding is all about the understanding of what someone already knows, based on the information given throughout the message being received.

Reception Theory

Popularized in the s, it suggests that there are multiple ways for media users to interpret media texts. The ways in which media producers encode messages and users decode them are bound up here in a complex hierarchy of cultural specificity and power relations. During the first half of the twentieth century a simple linear model of media communication was in vogue. However, this became viewed as too simplistic, and its characterization of a passive, homogenous media audience as disempowering. Because people are not all the same but are shaped by various cultural factors, such as class, gender, race, nationality, and so on, the meanings they attach to the words, images, and sounds contained in a media text might be quite different to the meaning they were meant to receive. Stuart Hall was a cultural theorist who was instrumental in founding the school of thought known as British Cultural Studies.

Message Decoder. Just paste a FIX message in the text box above. Place the circles so that the smaller circle with letters is on top of the bigger circle with pictures. The decoder does the opposite.
