Like Kant, Carnap holds that many traditional philosophical controversies are actually ill-posed pseudo-problems. In Carnap's eyes, for example, there's no fact about which the skeptic and the non-sceptic are disagreeing. The only real question in the vicinity concerns the best kind of linguistic framework to adopt — in particular, whether or not to adopt evidential rules strong enough to allow the existence of physical objects to be confirmed — and this is a matter of conventional, pragmatic choice, not of truth or falsity. When the Second Philosopher insists she has good evidence for the existence of ordinary objects, and even of unobservable atoms, Carnap's response echoes Kant's: for her purposes, operating inside the linguistic framework of science, she's quite right, but there is another inquiry, the Logic of Science, where other concerns ending the pseudo-debate between the sceptic and his opponent or the scientific realist and his opponent are addressed by other methods rational reconstruction. Like Kant, Carnap sees two distinct levels of inquiry, the Second Philosopher only one.

From the start of the analytic tradition in philosophy, in the works of Frege, Russell, and the early Wittgenstein, the use of logic to address philosophical problems has been a central theme. Besides surveying their philosophically most significant results, the essay traces their mutual influence, from their initial meetings in Central Europe to their later activities in the US, where each of them emigrated and their paths continued to cross. It also contrasts the strikingly different convictions of these three thinkers on basic philosophical issues, which did not prevent them from interacting fruitfully. The discussion revolves around the following topics: the transformation of modern logic, especially the rise of meta-logic; logicism and its relation to formal axiomatics; the notions of truth, logical truth, and logical consequence; formal semantics, metaphysics, and epistemology; and philosophical methodology. Analytic philosophy and modern logic are intimately connected, both historically and systematically.

He received his doctorate from Jena, where he had studied under Gottlob Frege, who, along with Ludwig Wittgenstein and Bertrand Russell profoundly influenced his thought. From Vienna he went to Prague, and in he founded, with Hans Reichenbach in Berlin, the journal Erkenntnis, the main organ for the publications of the logical positivists and empiricists.  Простите. - Шифр не поддается взлому, - сказал он безучастно. Не поддается. Сьюзан не могла поверить, что это сказал человек, двадцать семь лет работавший с шифрами. - Не поддается, сэр? - с трудом произнесла .
