The language wasn't too hard to read, and someone had annotated in the margins, although most of her annotations were simply exclamatory reactions to her distaste for the personalities of the characters. The second book was more difficult for me to read because of the flowery language and discontinuity of the narrative. There were some interesting things at the end of the book, I found the notes on the Hardwicke Act most captivating and there were also some excerpts from Burke. Sep 29, Tonia rated it really liked it Recommends it for: Those who are interested in 18th century Gothic romance and sentimental lit.

These texts are important as they are the beginnings of their genres, especially Otranto as the founder of Gothic Romance. The Man of Feeling belongs to the sentimental genre, which not necessarily a founder of the sentimental, but you can see how he influenced later writers like Scott and Shelley.

Otranto plot pulls you right through, Man of Feeling, really lots of bits to mull over. It's difficult to discern where Mackenzie stands in all the commentary and what he critiques in this novel. Aug 25, Leann rated it liked it Shelves: printed-book , purchased , school.

This should make for an good text to analyze though, especially in regard to gender, the supernatural, etc. Oct 18, kasia rated it really liked it.
