Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a psychotherapeutic approach with recognized efficiency in treating post-traumatic stress disorder PTSD , which is being used and studied in other psychiatric diagnoses partially based on adverse and traumatic life experiences. Nevertheless, there is not enough empirical evidence at the moment to support its usefulness in a diagnosis other than PTSD. It is commonly accepted that the use of EMDR in severely traumatized patients requires an extended stabilization phase.

Dolores Mosquera: A Three Day EMDR Advanced Webinar on Dissociation

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a psychotherapeutic approach with recognized efficiency in treating post-traumatic stress disorder PTSD , which is being used and studied in other psychiatric diagnoses partially based on adverse and traumatic life experiences. Nevertheless, there is not enough empirical evidence at the moment to support its usefulness in a diagnosis other than PTSD. It is commonly accepted that the use of EMDR in severely traumatized patients requires an extended stabilization phase. Some authors have proposed integrating both the theory of structural dissociation of the personality and the adaptive information processing model guiding EMDR therapy. One of these proposals is the Progressive Approach. Some of these EMDR procedures will be evaluated in a group therapy format, integrating them along with emotional regulation, dissociation, and trauma-oriented psychoeducational interventions. Patients presenting a history of severe traumatization, mostly early severe and interpersonal trauma, combined with additional significant traumatizing events in adulthood were included.

EMDR is a psychotherapeutic approach developed for the treatment of PTSD, meanwhile, practicing clinicians have found the application of EMDR to be useful in treating patients who have experienced emotionally traumatic events, which they described as distinctive of their family-of-origin, their personal life history and their attachment relations. In this book the authors describe some of the basic aspects that therapists must understand in order to adequately apply EMDR in the more severe cases, including dissociative disorders, personality disorders and different types of complex traumatization. After many early cautions about the potential dangers of using EMDR with individuals suffering from dissociative disorders, limited proposals have been offered for adapting EMDR procedures to this specific population. Based on these early cautions, EMDR is still considered by many clinicians as offering interventions that are limited to the treatment of traumatic memories in high functioning dissociative clients and only after a long preparation phase that depends on other treatment modalities. From this conceptualization, the use of EMDR is strongly limited and many survivors of severe traumatization are seen as unable to benefit from EMDR, if at all, only much later in the treatment process. Using this model, this workshop will demonstrate how EMDR clinicians can safely utilize a wide range of EMDR interventions from early in the preparatory phase of treatment for patients with dissociative disorders. Our aim is to provide a comprehensive model for applying EMDR therapy in the treatment of dissociative disorders, extending the AIP model to address the kinds of dysfunctionally stored information found in those with the most severe forms of traumatization and dissociative phobias.

Interesting interventions have been done for the use of EMDR in the preparation phase, but in spite of these useful proposals, EMDR is still considered by many clinicians as an intervention that is limited for the treatment of traumatic memories.
