Difference theory, broadly, is the notion that in communication and other interactions, men are fundamentally different from women. Difference theory has roots in the studies of John Gumperz , who examined differences in cross-cultural communication. While difference theory deals with cross-gender communication, the male and female genders are often presented as being two separate cultures, hence the relevance of Gumperz's studies. In her development of the difference theory, Deborah Tannen drew on the work of Daniel Maltz and Ruth Borker, in particular their paper, A Cultural Approach to Male-Female Miscommunication , which itself drew on the work of Gumperz. The reason for the popularity of Tannen's book You Just Don't Understand , and the resultant popularization of difference theory,   is generally attributed to the style of Tannen's work, in which she adopts a neutral position on differences in genderlect by making no value-judgements about use of language by either gender.

Re-reading this paper now, and paying closer attention to its context, I still found it just as delightfully human and just as psychologically shrewd as I remembered; but I also discovered that it has much more philosophical and historical substance than I had previously realized. On the contrary, James argued: just as natural selection can explain what causes a mutation to be preserved or to die out, but cannot explain what brings the mutations about initially, so sociology can explain the forces that preserve or destroy great men, but cannot explain what produces great men in the first place.
But these topics, as well as those of natural law and the unchangeability of moral norms, give him an opportunity, which he takes, to dispel certain contemporary confusions about the meaning of objective morality and to take issue with unfounded criticism of the traditional, especially thomistic, moral theology. Although there are abundant bibliographical notes in the text, the book lacks a systematic bibliography. There is an index of proper names, but a subject index is also missing. These, however, are minor defects in a book sufficiently updated to be useful both to the students and teachers of ethics. By Mortimer J. While the terms equity and equality may sound similar, the implementation of one versus the other can lead to dramatically different outcomes for marginalized people. Equality means each individual or group of people is given the same resources or opportunities. Equity recognizes that each person has different circumstances and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome. With equal support from evenly distributed tools, their access to the fruit still remains unequal. The equitable solution, however, allocates the exact resources that each person needs to access the fruit, leading to positive outcomes for both individuals. Equity is a solution for addressing imbalanced social systems. Justice can take equity one step further by fixing the systems in a way that leads to long-term, sustainable, equitable access for generations to come.
