The Americas were also referred to as the fourth part of the world. The terms " Old World " vs. One can speak of the "New World" in a historical context, e. For lack of alternatives, the term is also still useful to those discussing issues that concern the Americas and the nearby oceanic islands , such as Bermuda and Clipperton Island , collectively. Biological taxonomists often attach the "New World" label to groups of species that are found exclusively in the Americas, to distinguish them from their counterparts in the "Old World" Europe, Africa and Asia , e. The label is also often used in agriculture. Asia, Africa, and Europe share a common agricultural history stemming from the Neolithic Revolution , and the same domesticated plants and animals spread through these three continents thousands of years ago, making them largely indistinct and useful to classify together as "Old World".

This enormous volume was published by John Ogilby — in It was devised as a comprehensive guide to Africa — intended for a British readership — and includes maps, topographical engravings and narrative descriptions of the countries, provinces, peoples and customs of that continent. Very little of the information was original, as Ogilby compiled and translated it from a wide selection of pre-existing European sources. As the fledgling British Empire developed in the 17th century, knowledge of foreign lands was becoming increasingly important to the nation.
America : being the latest, and most accurate description of the New World : containing the original of the inhabitants, and the remarkable voyages thither : the conquest of the vast empires of Mexico and Peru, and other large provinces and territories, with the several European plantations in those parts : also their cities, fortresses, towns, temples, mountains, and rivers : their habits, customs, manners, and religions : their plants, beasts, birds, and serpents : with an appendix containing, besides several other considerable additions, a brief survey of what hath been discover'd of the unknown south-land and the Arctick region. Ogilby, John, Montanus, Arnoldus, ? Apparently based in part on Arnoldus Montanus's "De nieuwe en onbekende weereld : of beschryving van American en 't zuid-land," which was granted copyright privileges in July, , and published in Amsterdam in Sabin, who records an edition of Ogilby as bearing date of , says: "This English translation is, like Dapper's 'an impudent plagiarism from Montanus, plates included. In the text many changes and additions were made by Ogilby, and his maps of Maryland, Jamaica and Barbados are not found in Montanus. The general map of America in Ogilby also differs materially from that in the Dutch work.
Engraved allegorical frontispiece, letterpress title in red and black, 19 double-page or folding engraved maps, 31 double-page or folding engraved views, 6 full-page engraved portraits, numerous engraved in-text illustrations. Expertly bound to style in full red morocco, with gilt-tooled panel design on covers. The final leaf of instructions for placing the plates retains the first issue listing, not reflecting the present changes. Ogilby's map is the second appearance of this rare and highly important map, which was first issued in A Relation of Maryland; Together with a Map of the Countrey. Papenfuse speculated that the map may have been prepared by Jerome Hawley and John Lewger, but the maker remains unknown. The map is the first map to focus on Maryland and is of great significance in border disputes with Pennsylvania, where the map was used as evidence by the Penn family against the Calvert family, the proprietors of Maryland because the map showed the 40th parallel too far south.
London: by the Author, Folio 11 by 17 inches , modern full russet morocco, raised bands. First edition of one of the greatest illustrated English works on the New World, with 51 splendid double-page engraved views and maps, six full-page portraits, frontispiece, and 66 illustrations in the text. The work contains "the first extensive account of Maryland" and one of the earliest views of New York City. A handsomely bound, wide-margined copy. Ogilby's America is a considerable extension of Montanus' De Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld , on which it is in part based.
