The origins and history of consciousness is a book , the psychologist and philosopher Erich Neumann, in which the author attempts "to outline the archetypal stages of consciousness development". It was first published in English in in a translation by R. Work was seen as an important and significant contribution to Jungian thought, but was criticized for the use of evidence is misleading and makes untenable assumptions. Neumann describes the book as an attempt "to outline the archetypal stages of consciousness", explaining that it is based on depth psychology, particularly analytical psychology psychiatrist Carl Jung. He discusses topics such as mythology, including a figure of Osiris, archetypes such as the Great Mother, the matriarch, ontogeny and phylogeny, the collective unconscious, psychological process, which he calls the "centroversion", masculinity, femininity and homosexuality. He argues that "consciousness, as such, is masculine even in women, as the unconscious is feminine in men. The book includes a Foreword by Jung, who praises her and compares its emphasis on "matriarchal symbols" and use the symbol of the Ouroboros, to their work.
