In earlier publications we have proposed a model to explain the functional role of water temple networks in the agro-ecology of wet rice irrigation on the island of Bali. We argued that the key ecological effects of temple networks are best understood as emergent properties of a complex adaptive system. This argument implies that important aspects of the temple system are largely opaque from the perspective of conventional social science. We proposed that the Green Revolution created a real-world test of our model, by effectively removing the temple networks from their functional role in ecological management. The idea that water temple networks represent a hitherto-unknown kind of institution has been met with appropriate skepticism by other social scientists, who have run a fine-toothed comb through our evidence.

For the Balinese, the whole of nature is a perpetual resource: through centuries of carefully directed labor, the engineered landscape of the island's rice terraces has taken shape. According to Stephen Lansing, the need for effective cooperation in water management links thousands of farmers together in hierarchies of productive relationships that span entire watersheds. Lansing describes the network of water temples that once managed the flow of irrigation water in the name of the Goddess of the Crater Lake. Using the techniques of ecological simulation modeling as well as cultural and historical analysis, Lansing argues that the symbolic system of temple rituals is not merely a reflection of utilitarian constraints but also a basic ingredient in the organization of production. Self-Governance Lessons from Bali and Stephen Lansing

Furthermore, he suggested that subak irrigation associations have been democratic organizations run exclusively by farmers; no lords or rulers were involved in the management of irrigation agriculture. The submitted article documents this perspective too. Three issues have come under criticism from different scholars: A The allegedly democratic organization of irrigation agriculture, the non-involvement of lords and the commoner-based water temples Schulte Nordholt, myself. B The pest control as a goal of the water temple management and the synchronization of water use Vayda, Falvo. In the submitted article, the authors react to critiques only in a restricted way; mainly to two articles published in Human Ecology 39,1 and to a chapter by Vayda They react to A and B , but not to C.

He is especially known from his decades of research on the emergent properties of human-environmental interactions in Bali, Borneo and the Malay Archipelago; [1] social-ecological modeling, [2] and complex adaptive systems. After graduation Lansing in began his professional career at the University of Southern California as Assistant Professor. He became Associate Professor in and Professor in Anthropology from to From to he also chaired the Department of Anthropology. In , Lansing and colleagues showed that the self-organization of the water temple networks is not an historical accident, but an emergent property of a self-governing system of environmental management.
