Thomas Stearns Eliot, or T. Eliot as he is better known, was born in in St. He was the son of a prominent industrialist who came from a well- connected Boston family. Eliot began graduate study in philosophy at Harvard and completed his dissertation, although the outbreak of World War I prevented him from taking his examinations and receiving the degree. Alfred Prufrock, and the War, which kept him in England, led him to decide to pursue poetry full-time. Eliot met Ezra Pound in , as well, and it was Pound who was his main mentor and editor and who got his poems published and noticed.

During a break from his job as a bank clerk to recover from a mental breakdown , Eliot finished the work that was to secure him fame, The Waste Land. It was also around this time that Eliot began to write criticism, partly in an effort to explain his own methods.

Eliot, the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, is one of the giants of modern literature, highly distinguished as a poet, literary critic, dramatist, and editor and publisher. In these college poems, Eliot articulated distinctly modern themes in forms that were both a striking development of and a marked departure from those of 19th-century poetry. While the origins of The Waste Land are in part personal, the voices projected are universal. Eliot later denied that he had large cultural problems in mind, but, nevertheless, in The Waste Land he diagnosed the malaise of his generation and indeed of Western civilization in the 20th century.
