Language is not always neutrally utilized by a politician. It is framed to persuade people to think and act in line with the intention of the orator or the ideology of the group he represents. This study dealt with ideological discourse analysis of Obama speech in Cairo. It focused on the cognitive processes showing the link of the ideology structure and discourse structures. This study was 1 to identify the underpinning ideology of the speech, 2 how the ideology structure link with the discourse structures employed, covering a how the ideology was expressed at global meaning level and at local meaning level, b how propositional structures were employed as ideology controlled strategy, c how sentence syntax was employed as ideology —controlled strategy, d how discourse forms or genres were employed as an ideology-controlled strategy, and e how styles were employed as persuasive ideology-controlled strategy in his efforts to frame peace.
Critical discourse analysis CDA is an interdisciplinary approach to the study of discourse that views language as a form of social practice. Scholars working in the tradition of CDA generally argue that non-linguistic social practice and linguistic practice constitute one another and focus on investigating how societal power relations are established and reinforced through language use. Critical discourse analysis emerged from 'critical linguistics' developed at the University of East Anglia by Roger Fowler and fellow scholars in the s, and the terms are now often interchangeable. Ruth Wodak has also made a major contribution to this field of study. Language connects with the social through being the primary domain of ideology , and through being both a site of, and a stake in, struggles for power.
This chapter explores the use of critical discourse analysis CDA within higher education research. CDA is an approach to studying language and its relation to power, ideology and inequality. Within CDA, texts are not analysed in isolation, but as part of the institutional and discoursal practices in which they are embedded. Within the broad field of educational research, CDA has been increasingly used to explore the relationship between language and society; higher education research appears to be experiencing a similar turn to CDA. The chapter begins with an overview of CDA, outlining its origins, and discussing its position as both a theory and a method. A review of CDA-related higher education research follows.
To study ideology is to some extent, to study the ways in which language and meaning are used in everyday forms of social interaction. This is why a theory of language and a linguistic tradition which concerns itself with ideology will be much richer than narrow approaches which concern themselves only with system of signs, fixed meanings or well formed sentences. A theory of language as a social semiotic and of language and ideology has to concern itself with language as a form of social interaction, a meaning potential in and through which subjects and the social are constructed and reproduce while cultural and human conflict are negotiated. Such an analysis depends upon an account of relations of power which takes into account on cultural conflict and the problem of lack of consensus about systems of ideas or beliefs which characterize social systems and includes an account of the relations between action, institutions and social structures. CDA takes particular interest in the relationship between language and power.
