Discusses tension structures that are predominantly roofing forms, created from pre-stressed cable nets, cable trusses and continuous membranes. This book discusses the role of stable minimal surfaces, in finding optimal shapes of membrane and cable structures. It also presents numerical modelling of the structural form. Read more

Definition 3. Fabric has a strong tensile strength and will creep stretch very slightly only a few percent over 20 years of use. Common Misconceptions 4. Why tensile are the shape they are? Fig 1. A fifth person pushing down on the ball can deflect it easily. Try lifting two opposite strings and lowering the other two. Fig 2. The ball is now locked in space. Four or more point system when the fabric is stretched between a set of alternating high and low points Saddle Roof The roof plan, taken directly from the structural engineering working drawings, illustrates the roof configuration and its components.

The saddle-shaped roof of the stage cover nestles under the auditorium roof of the project. The leaningA-frames and the stay cables which hold them back are clearly visible, along with the radial cables which shape the tent units.

The corner tripods, each consisting of a vertical mast and two sloping cables, are connected to concrete anchors rising from the water. Section through the project showing the stage roof tucked under the auditorium roof. The peaks of a mast supported structure are determined by the design and how the fabric is attached. The fabric that extends from the top of the opening is seamed and can necessitate patterning. Arch Supported Roof Typical arch shapes defined by physical and ergonomic constraints.

Tensile structure

This paper deals with tension loaded structures made of coated woven fabric, cables and rigid frames such as mats and hoops. It describes in details a general framework for modelling and numerical simulation of their mechanical behavior. Several methods, developped in these last decades, are presented and compared. The principal particularity of these structures is that they derive their stiffness and their stability from the surface geometry and tensile stress field coupling. This particularity is combined with nonlinearities which can be due to possible large deflections, material law behavior and local instabilities due to wrinkling effects.

Computational methods for tension-loaded structures

Tension Structures, Second edition delivers a unique coverage of the topic of tension structures ranging from a variety of pre-stressed cable net and fabric roofing forms to suspension bridge cables. The emphasis is on finding minimum energy forms of these structures by analogy to nature. As a permanent fixture of modern architecture, tension structures demonstrate their potential for creating aesthetically pleasing art forms and offer wonderful design opportunities that arise from their ability to span large distances with elegance and structural efficiency. Tension Structures, Second edition compiles a vast amount of knowledge while providing an accessible entry to a rather specialised field. The mathematical expositions are set at an undergraduate level and, wherever possible, non-mathematical language is used to aid the understanding of fundamental concepts.

To develop an enthusiastic and creative approach to the solution of design problems in lightweight structures. Skills: Ability to apply CAD methods to the conceptual design of lightweight structures, and to understand the theoretical basis for these methods. An ability to develop practical design details for lightweight structures. Content: Characteristics, behaviour and analytical methods for funicular cable structures subject to uniform and non-uniform loadings.

A tensile structure is a construction of elements carrying only tension and no compression or bending. The term tensile should not be confused with tensegrity , which is a structural form with both tension and compression elements.

- Senor Becker?
