Quantum cognition is an emerging field which applies the mathematical formalism of quantum theory to model cognitive phenomena such as information processing by the human brain, language , decision making , human memory , concepts and conceptual reasoning, human judgment , and perception. Quantum cognition is based on the quantum-like paradigm [5] [6] or generalized quantum paradigm [7] or quantum structure paradigm [8] that information processing by complex systems such as the brain, taking into account contextual dependence of information and probabilistic reasoning, can be mathematically described in the framework of quantum information and quantum probability theory. Quantum cognition uses the mathematical formalism of quantum theory to inspire and formalize models of cognition that aim to be an advance over models based on traditional classical probability theory. The field focuses on modeling phenomena in cognitive science that have resisted traditional techniques or where traditional models seem to have reached a barrier e. The brain is definitely a macroscopic physical system operating on the scales of time, space, temperature which differ crucially from the corresponding quantum scales.

Quantum physics and human psychology may seem completely unrelated, but some scientists think the two fields overlap in interesting ways. Both disciplines attempt to predict how unruly systems might behave in the future. The difference is that one field aims to understand the fundamental nature of physical particles, while the other attempts to explain human nature — along with its inherent fallacies. Classical theories of decision-making attempt to predict what choice a person will make given certain parameters, but fallible humans don't always behave as expected. Recent research suggests that these lapses in logic "can be well explained by quantum probability theory," Zhang said.

Recent years were characterized by the real explosion of interest to applications of quantum measurement theory and other parts of quantum formalism outside of physics, especially in psychology, decision making, economics, finances, and social science as well as in genetics and molecular biology , see, e. The purpose of this chapter is to introduce psychologists to this fascinating theory. This chapter is organized into six sections. First, some of the basic psychological principles supporting a quantum approach to cognition and decision are summarized; second, some notations and definitions needed to understand quantum probability theory are presented; third, a comparison of quantum and classical probability theories is presented; fourth, quantum probability theory is used to account for some paradoxical findings in the field of human probability judgments; fifth, a comparison of quantum and Markov dynamic theories is presented; and finally, a quantum dynamic model is used to account for some puzzling findings of decision-making research. The chapter concludes with a summary of advantages and disadvantages of a quantum probability theoretical framework for modeling cognition and decision.
