Thoughts, like fleas, jump from man to man.

Cultural traits are transmitted from person to person, similarly to genes or viruses. Cultural evolution therefore can be understood through thesame basic mechanisms of reproduction, spread, variation, and natural selection that underlie biological evolution. The concept of meme canbe defined as an information pattern, held in an individual's memory, which is capable of being copied to another individual's memory. Memetics can thenbe defined as the theoretical and empirical science that studies the replication, spread and evolution of memes.

Evolution of Culture, Memetics

It is almost 30 years ago since Richard Dawkins was given credit for introducing the meme as a concept for studying cultural evolution. Despite the growing interest for both evolution and complexity in the social sciences, the highly controversial field of Memetics has been accused for being a fad and a pseudoscience, never able to establish itself as a recognized research program. Some 10 years ago it was even sentenced to death by some academics in the field. This article examines the status of Memetics, and suggests ways to make it grow further as a scientific discipline. Defined as cultural units that spread from person to person, memes were debated long before the digital era. Yet the Internet turned the spread of memes into a highly visible practice, and the term has become an integral part of the netizen vernacular. After evaluating the promises and pitfalls of memes for understanding digital culture, I address the problem of defining memes by charting a communication-oriented typology of 3 memetic dimensions: content, form, and stance. Memes are a pain. Or so at least a glance into the world of academic literature would suggest. Ever since Richard Dawkins coined the term in to describe gene-like infectious units of culture that spread from person to person, memes have been the subject of constant academic debate, derision, and even outright dismissal.

Memetics is the study of information and culture based on an analogy with Darwinian evolution. Proponents describe memetics as an approach to evolutionary models of cultural information transfer. Memetics describes how an idea can propagate successfully, but doesn't necessarily imply a concept is factual. The term meme was coined in Richard Dawkins ' book The Selfish Gene , but Dawkins later distanced himself from the resulting field of study. Thus what would otherwise be regarded as one individual influencing another to adopt a belief is seen as an idea-replicator reproducing itself in a new host.

When the book went on the market during the Netherlands Boekenweek Book Week in February , Grunberg along with neuroscientist and researcher Ysbrand van der Werf together on a book tour discussed their experiment at various bookstores and lecture halls. These spectacular experiments on the contrary do not reveal spectacular results, they however do display the cutting edge of interdisciplinary studies between literature and the cognitive sciences. His rather arbitrary list of memes includes tunes, ideas, catch-phrases, clothes fashions, pot making, and arch building It has, incidentally, materially diminished my capacity to enjoy the original symphony.

Blute, M. Memetics and evolutionary social science. Memetics is the scientific study of memes. The publication in of Susan Blackmore's bestselling The Meme Machine re-awakened the debate over the highly controversial field of memetics. The one thing noticeably missing though, has been any kind of proper debate over the validity of a concept regarded by many as scientifically suspect. This book pits intellectuals both supporters and opponents of meme theory against each other to battle it out and state their case. With a foreword by Daniel Dennett, and contributions from Dan Sperber, David Hull, Robert Boyd, Susan Blackmore, Henry Plotkin, and others, the result is a debate that will perhaps mark a turning point for the field and for future research.
